The Liberty Mutual Insurance is an international insurance company with headquarters in Boston , Massachusetts. The company employs over 50,000 people and has more than 800 offices worldwide.
history
The company was founded in 1912 as the Massachusetts Employees' Insurance Association (MEIA). The background was that the US state of Massachusetts passed a law, whereby the companies were obliged to take out accident insurance for their employees.
In 1917 the name was changed to "Liberty Mutual Insurance Company".
With around USD 38.3 billion in revenues and fixed assets of around USD 125.6 billion, the Liberty Mutual Insurance Group is the fifth largest property and casualty insurer in the USA (as of 2016) and ranks 75th on the Fortune 500 list.
The company's chief executive officer is David H. Long.
In April 2008, Liberty Mutual acquired Seattle- based insurance company Safeco .
In 2017, Ironshore Inc. was acquired for around USD 3 billion.
