Rodney S. Quinn

Rodney S. Quinn (born May 27, 1923 in Portland , Maine , † October 27, 2012 in Scarborough , Maine) was an American soldier and politician who was Secretary of State of Maine from 1979 to 1988 .

Life

Rodney Sharon Quinn was born in Portland in 1923 to John Francis Quinn and Edith Marcena Sharon. He attended school in Gorham . His mother Edith Quinn ran a boarding house for boys who attended Gorham Normal School. After graduating from high school, he joined the Army Air Corps . During the Second World War he was stationed in China with the “Flying Tigers” . He served as the commander of an air transport squadron during the Korean War . He was then stationed in the Far East , Alaska and, in addition to various other positions in the USA, also in the Pentagon . During this time he earned at Sacramento Statethe Bachelor and at Stanford University the Master .

He retired from active service with the Air Force in 1968. He was then Gorham City Councilor for six years. He campaigned for buildings for senior-friendly living and for a new city center with a modern fire station. In 1974 he was elected to the Maine House of Representatives. As a member of the Democratic Party , he ran for Secretary of State and held this office from 1979 to 1988. His program against drunk driving was later rolled out nationally.

Quinn was the author of a weekly political satire column for a local newspaper and author of several books. He has also worked as a teacher and lecturer at the University of Maryland , the College of William & Mary , the Joint Forces Staff College , the University of Maine and Cheverus High School.

Rodney S. Quinn married Melba Inez Robbins in 1947. They were married for 65 years, two weeks before his death on October 27, 2012 his wife Melba died. The couple had four children.
