Roscoe Greene

Roscoe Goddard Greene (born June 1, 1796 as Charles Roscoe Green in Northborough , Massachusetts , † December 14, 1840 in Portland , Maine ) was an American educator , publisher and politician who was Secretary of State of Maine from 1831 to 1834 .

Life

Charles Roscoe Green was born as the second son of Aaron Green (1770-1840) and Lydia Goddard (1771-1850) as well as his eight siblings in the US state of Massachusetts. He later lived in Portland, Maine. Because of the existence of two other people with the name Charles Green in Portland and the associated mix-ups, he officially changed his name to Roscoe Goddard Greene .

As a member of the Democratic Party , Greene was Secretary of State of Maine from 1831 to 1834. At the time of his death he was a "Surveyor" from Portland, Maine.

Greene was the author and owner of the Eastern Argus Newspaper. An educator by profession, he has also published several books on English grammar.

Private

In May 1825, Roscoe G. Greene married Eliza Ann Harding (1806-1884) in Portland . They had four children, a daughter and three sons. Greene died in December 1840 at the age of 44 in Portland (Maine) and was initially buried there in Eastern Cemetery , but after the death of his wife at her will in a joint grave at Hiram Village Cemetery in Hiram (Maine) reburied.
