Markham L. Gartley

Markham L. Gartley (born May 16, 1944 ) is an American soldier and politician who was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam from 1968 to 1972 and Secretary of State of Maine from 1975 to 1978 .

Life

Markham Ligon Gartley was born on May 16, 1944 to Gerry and Minnie Lee Gartley.

Gartley was a US Navy soldier in the Vietnam War and was captured in August 1968. He was not released until four years later. His mother, Minnie Lee Gartley, traveled to Hanoi to pick up her son from captivity.

After returning from Vietnam, Gartley lived in Greenville , Maine. As a member of the Democratic Party , he ran for Secretary of State and held this office from 1975 to 1978. In 1974 Gartley ran unsuccessfully against William Cohen for a seat in the United States House of Representatives .

Gartley now lives in North Fort Myers , Florida .
