history
Greenville is located at the southern end of Moosehead Lake in western Piscataquis County. It is the starting point and supply base for lumberjacks, explorers, anglers, hunters and tourists. The grant for the southern half of the area was in favor of the Thornton Academy in Saco and for the northern half in favor of the Saco Free Bridge. The first settler in the area, Nathaniel Haskell of Westbrook, earned the Academy Grant, which had some very good agricultural land, and settled it with his family in 1827. More settlers followed. In 1836 a first steamship was put into operation on Moosehead Lake for freight transport . Others were added, including those for passengers. In 1831 the area was organized as Haskells Plantation and on February 26, 1836 as Town Greenville.
The railway reached Greenville with the Bangor and Piscataquis Railroad and in the 1870s Greenville was connected to the network. Greenville was also to be connected to the Pittsfield – Harmony railway as the end point of the line, but since the Bangor and Piscataquis Railroad reached the place first, it did not come to that. Greenville was also connected to the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad .
