Cota was accepted into a freestyle training program at the age of twelve. From February 2005 he was first used in the North American continental championship, the Nor-Am Cup. In the 2008/09 season he won the Moguls classification of the Nor-Am Cup with seven podium places. He made his debut in the Freestyle World Cup on January 14, 2010 in Deer Valley , where he immediately finished sixth. This was his best result in his debut season.
Cota caught up with the world's best in the course of the 2010/11 season with several top 10 results. The first podium he achieved on January 22, 2011 in the Moguls competition of Lake Placid . At the 2011 World Championships in Deer Valley, he just missed a medal when he finished fourth in the Moguls. Another third place followed on February 25, 2011 in Mariánské Lázně . His best ranking so far is 2nd on January 14, 2012 in Mont Gabriel .
