Blanchard was organized as a town on March 17, 1831. The area was previously known as Township No. 3, Third Range Bingham's Kennebec Purchase, East of Kennebec River (T3 R3 BKP EKR) . Blanchard was named after Charles Blanchard, an early landowner.

In 1951 the organization as Town was canceled and Blanchard was organized as Blanchard Plantation . This ended in 1984, since then Blanchard has belonged to the Unorganized Territories.
