history

The grant for Brownville was awarded several times because the first two or three buyers of the area failed to meet their obligations and the area thus fell back to the state. The area was explored in 1805 by a Mr. Holland and shortly afterwards bought by lawyer Moses Brown and Major Josiah Hills of Newburyport . They started the first settlements. In 1806 they built a dam and mills on the Pleasant River. The mills were operated by Major Hills. Other settlers, traders and clergymen followed.

Brownville itself was connected to the US railroad network in December 1881 by the Bangor and Katahdin Iron Works Railway , followed by the main line to Houlton in 1893 , which was built by the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad .
