The first settlers were Abner and Allen Hoxie, James Philpot, William M. and Eben Ewer, William and Solon Hamlin and on January 31, 1832 the area was organized as the Town of Milton . The new town was poorly managed and many of the residents became impoverished. After General Boyd's death, Henry Orne of Boston inherited the land and tried to improve the situation. He built a sawmill and a flour mill on the spout of Boyd Pond. Further shops also improved the economic situation of the community. The town's name was changed to Almond in 1841 and Orneville in 1842 in honor of an early citizen .

In 1837 land was given to neighboring Atkinson. The organization as a town was abolished in 1939 and ended in 1945. Orneville has belonged to the Unorganized Territorys since then and is now called Southeast Piscataquis.
