history

Abbot was organized as a town on January 13, 1827. The area was previously known as Township No. 7, Seventh Range North of Waldo Patent (T7 R7 NWP) or known as the westernmost of the Bowdoin College townships , or Moorestown . It was named after the Treasurer of Bowdoin College, John Abbott. Over the years the second “t” in the name was lost.

Abraham Moore was the first settler to settle in the area in 1805. He brought his family to join him in 1807. At the time the area was called Moorestown; around 1810 it had 45 inhabitants. Moore built a sawmill on the Piscataquis. A one-room school, the Washington School, named after Martha Washington , was used as a school until the 1950s, when it has served as the town's meeting place and polling station.

The town's economy was boosted when Abbot was connected to Bangor on the rail network in 1874. The town flourished and had two train stations in a row. Two covered bridges spanned the Piscataquis.
