In 1800, Colonel Calvin Sanger of Sherborn , Massachusetts bought about three-quarters and shortly thereafter the rest of the land that would later become town. The first settler in the area, Phineas Ames, also built the first flour mill. He brought his family to Sangerville in the autumn of 1803. Initially, the area was named Township No. 4, Sixth Range North of Waldo Patent (T4 R6 NWP) , then Amestown . When it was organized as a town on June 16, 1814, the name was set to Sangerville in honor of the main owner.
