Atkinson is an Unorganized Territory in Piscataquis County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010, 326 people lived there in 198 households on an area of ​​101.14 km². On July 1, 2019, the organization as a town was repealed after approval by the legislature and a vote of the voters of the area and Atkinson is now one of the Unorganized Territories.

Geographical location

Atkinson is in the south of Piscataquis County and borders on Penobscot County . In the north, the Piscataquis River, which flows in an easterly direction, borders the Atkinson area. A few smaller rivers flow through the area where there are no lakes. The surface is flat, without any higher elevations.

Atkinson was organized as a town on February 29, 1819. The area was previously known as Township No. 2, Sixth Range North of Waldo Patent (T2 R6 NWP) also known as St. Loe (Saint Loe) . The Grant for Atkinson earned Vaughan & Mereck and the area was for a price of 25 cents per acre sold. Judges Atkinson and Oliver Crosby were among the first buyers. The Colcord brothers, who arrived in the area in 1807, set up a sawmill on Dead Stream.

After several failed attempts, Atkinson was disorganized on July 1, 2019 and incorporated into the Unorganized Territorys.
