The Piscataquis River is a right tributary of the Penobscot River in the counties of Penobscot and Piscataquis in the US state of Maine .
The Piscataquis River arises at the confluence of its two headwaters, West Branch and East Branch, about 20 km south of Moosehead Lake and 2 km west of Lake Hebron . It initially flows southeast to Abbot and on to Gulford . It now flows east past Sangerville and Dover-Foxcroft . The Sebec River flows southeast of Milo and shortly thereafter the Pleasant River flows into the river from the left. It finally flows into the south-flowing Penobscot River after about 100 km at Howland .
The Penobscot River Restoration Trust intends to shut down the hydropower plant at the mouth of the Piscataquis River near Howland and to allow the associated dam to flow around.
The name Piscataquis comes from the Abenaki language and means "on the arm of the river".
