history

Monson was incorporated by state legislative act on February 8, 1822. Previously, the place was part of the Hebron Academy and the Monson Academy by a grant from the State of Massachusetts in 1811. On April 22, 1822 the place had its first council meeting, with which the administrative structures were determined. After the land was cleared , the first residents came in 1816.

Slate was discovered by a resident from Wales in 1870 and many slate quarries sprang up over the next few decades, resulting in a growing population and a good source of income for the residents. A narrow-gauge railroad , the Monson Railroad, with more than four locomotives used for slate haulage and to transport passengers to the larger Bangor and Aroostook Railroad in Abbot, was able to be built in a row. The slate industry declined after the First World War .

education

Monson has an elementary school and a secondary school, both known as Monson Academy. Although classes were not taught until 1847, the last major building fell victim to a fire in 1861. The school stayed open in 1968 when the buildings were remodeled and grades 7-12 moved to Dover-Foxcroft. The academy also won basketball tournaments in Maine in the 1950s and 1960s. Many of the trophies and other souvenirs are on display at the Monson Museum. The school team was known as the Slaters and their colors were orange and black.
Today, the primary school and gym, which is used for local and private events, are on the site of the original school building. The bandstand was recently restored. The primary school has existed since the 1980s; an expansion took place in the 1990s, when a room was built for a new library and classrooms. Only 40 students were enrolled at the school. With grades 1–4 it is to be expected as a preschool. The primary school is part of MSAD 68 . By the Maine State decision in March 2009, MSAD 68 directors had voted to close the Monson Elementary School and bus transfer students to Dover-Foxcroft. It begins in the 2009–2010 school year; as a result, increasing enrollments and costs are due.
