Isopu Tower

The San Blas Tower , also called Isopu Tower ( Maltese it-Torri ta 'Isopu ), Ta' Sopu Tower , Nadur Tower or Torre Nuova , is a defense tower on the island of Gozo, which belongs to Malta . It stands in the northeast of the island on the cliffs between San Blas Bay and Daħlet Qorrot and belongs to the municipality of Nadur .

history

The tower was built in 1667 under the rule of Grand Master Nicolas Cotoner , the costs of which were borne by the Order's government agency, the Università of Gozo. In June 1798, the cannons in this tower were the only ones to fire on the approaching French fleet.

After the tower fell into disrepair over the centuries, it was repaired between 2003 and 2006 with the participation of Dín l-Art Ħelwa and the Nadur municipal council. Because of the remoteness of the building, the restoration work had to be carried out entirely by hand. The inside of the tower had collapsed and the original spiral staircase no longer existed. The roof also had to be rebuilt.

description

The relatively small tower has a square floor plan, its thick walls are slightly inclined inward. The interior consists of a high barrel vault , into which an intermediate floor resting on ribbed arches is inserted. A reconstructed spiral staircase connects the floors with one another.
