The Nadur Tower from the outside

The Nadur Tower ( Maltese Torri tan-Nadur ) is a former watchtower in the northwest of the main Maltese island of Malta . It is located in the Rabat municipality area near the Victoria Lines at Binġemma Gap . The tower is a Grade 1 listed building and is listed in the National Inventory of Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands under number 60.

history

The Nadur Tower was built in 1637 as one of the Lascaris Towers . It is the only one of these watchtowers to stand inland, at a height of 220 m above sea level. This tower served as a relay station for the towers distributed along the coast in order to forward messages from the nearby towers - such as the Lippija Tower or the Għajn Tuffieħa Tower - to the fortress in Mdina by shooting a cannon or lighting a fire if enemy ships were approaching . The reason for the construction of smaller towers than the Wignacourt Towers was due to the diminishing possibilities of the Order of St. John to station troops at every conceivable landing site of the Maltese archipelago .

description

The tower rises on a square base of 6 m × 6 m and shows sloping walls. In contrast to the other towers from the time of Grand Master Jean de Lascaris-Castellar , it is only one-story and therefore does not reach the height of 11 m that is usual for the other Lascaris towers. The interior consists of a single room from which a steep staircase leads to the flat roof.
