Captain's Tower
Captain's Tower ( Maltese It-Torri tal-Kaptan , also Capitano Tower ) is a residential tower in Naxxar on Malta .
history
The tower was built around 1550 under the rule of Grand Master Jean de la Valette to serve as a residence for the captain of the Naxxar regiment of the island militia . This became necessary after the requisition of the Gauci Tower failed.
The well-preserved tower is privately owned and is not open to the public.
architecture
The Captain's Tower is a rectangular stone building with three stories that have stone arches. At the four sides of the building roof height in the middle bretèche with machicolations (Maltese galleriji tal-misħun attached), which constitute the main defense of the tower. A special feature is the dovecote standing on the roof , which housed carrier pigeons for communication with the command office in Mdina and later with Valletta .
