Triq il-Wiesgħa Tower

The Triq il-Wiesgħa Tower ( Maltese Torri ta 'Triq il-Wiesgħa , English Triq il-Wiesgħa Tower or Triq-il-Wiesga Tower ) is a watchtower on the island of Malta . It is located on the coast in the municipality of Żabbar and is a Grade 1 building under monument protection .

history

The tower is one of the thirteen De Redin Towers that were built in 1658 and 1659 under the rule of Grand Master Martin de Redin of the Order of St. John . In later times it was rebuilt several times. Photographs from the 19th century show a completely collapsed rear wall and the exposed barrel vault , which was later rebuilt. The last restoration was carried out by the current user, the Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna Foundation .

description

The only access was through a small door at the level of the first floor on the side of the tower facing away from the sea.

The interior is divided into two superimposed rooms by a false ceiling supported by arches. While the lower, windowless room served as a warehouse, the upper room was the apartment of the small crew. A spiral staircase within the massive masonry connects the upper floor with the flat roof, which is surrounded by a parapet with battlements . An opening in the roof forms the ventilation. There is a small window on the lake side.
