Żonqor Tower

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Żonqor Tower ( Maltese Torri taż-Żonqor ) was the eleventh of a total of thirteen De Redin Towers . It stood a few hundred meters west of Żonqor Point , which forms the easternmost point of Malta , in the area of the Marsaskala municipality in Malta.

history

The watchtower was built in 1659 during the reign of the Grand Master Martin de Redin on the spot where a lookout post had been since the Middle Ages. It was destroyed by British troops in 1915 in order to have a clear field of fire for the modern coastal artillery.

Building

The tower consisted of two rooms one above the other and a viewing platform on the roof. Like all De Redin Towers, it was equipped with two cannons and constantly manned by four men. However, it only served to monitor the coast and could not withstand a prolonged siege.
