Matthew Dunlap (born November 26, 1964 in Bar Harbor , Maine ) is an American chef and politician who was the 47th Secretary of State of Maine from 2005 to 2010 and has been the incumbent 49th Secretary of State since 2013 .

Life

Matthew Dunlap was born in Bar Harbor, Maine. He attended Mount Desert Island High School, then studied at the University of Maine , where he earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1987 and a master's degree in English literature in 1994 . He graduated from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2000 with a certificate in state and local administration.

Dunlap is a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Maine House of Representatives from 1996 to 2004 and Secretary of State from 2004 to 2010. He was re-elected to this office in 2013 and currently holds the office.

He was a member and also chairman of various committees at the local and state levels. From 2000 to 2001 chairman of the Citizen's Advisory Commission to Secure Future of Maine's Fish and Wildlife , in 2002 he was a member of the Legislative Apportionment Commission , from 1999 to 2003 chairman of the Marsh Island Community Deer Committee , in 2005 member of the Negotiated Rulemaking Commission to Make Recommendations for Minimum Standards for State-Issued Driver Licenses and ID Cards , 2006 Chairman of the Cultural Building Task Force , from 2006 to 2007 Chairman of the Maine State Employees Combined Charitable Appeal , in 2008 he was a member of the Working Group to Study State Residency Requirements of From 2009 to 2010 the Permanent Commission of the Status of Women , 2010 the Domestic Violence Working Group , from 2010 to 2011 the Keeping Maine's Forests Working Group , he is also chairman of the Old Town Democratic City Committee and a member of the National Electronic Commerce Coordinating Council .

He exercised a wide variety of professions, was a member of the National Poetry Foundation, worked in several restaurants as a cook, waiter, bartender and bar manager, radio show host, was an author for Northern Lights Publishing, from 1989 to 1995 he worked as Koch at the University of Maine, proofreader at the University of Maine Printing Services from 1994 to 2004, executive director of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine in 2011, served on the editorial board of the Journal of Mind and Behavior and was a trapper and textile worker.

In 2012 he was running for candidacy for the United States Senate . In the primary he was defeated by Cynthia Dill , who was defeated by Angus King in the Senate election .

Matthew Dunlap is married with one daughter.
