Cyrus W. Davis

Cyrus W. Davis (born September 25, 1856 in Buxton , Maine , † November 1, 1917 in Portland , Maine) was an American lawyer and politician who was Secretary of State of Maine from 1911 to 1912 .

Life

Cyrus W. Davis was born in Buxton, Maine to Cyrus Davis and Hariett Pratt. He graduated from Gorham Academy in 1870 and then worked as a clerk in a haberdashery store in Biddeford .

He partnered with Samuel Smith, Jr. in Waterville in 1875 and opened Davis and Soule in 1890 with offices in Waterville and Boston. He was also involved in setting up a gold mine in Colorado. From 1901 to 1904 he was a member of the Maine House of Representatives and from 1903 to 1904 he was Mayor of Waterville.

As a member of the Democratic Party , he ran unsuccessfully for governor of Maine in 1904 . He was defeated by William T. Cobb .

Davis was the Collector of Port for Portland in 1911 and the District Surveyor from 1914 until his death in 1917. He was the editor and author of the Waterville Daily Sentinel, a Democratic newspaper.

From 1911 to 1912, Cyrus W. Davis was Secretary of State of Maine.

Cyrus W. Davis was married to Flora E. Philbrook (1856-1940). The couple had two sons. He died in Portland on November 1, 1917. His grave is in Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterville.
