Helgi Hallvarðsson

Helgi Hallvarðsson (born June 12, 1931 in Reykjavík ; † March 15, 2008 ibid) was a sea captain of the Icelandic Coast Guard .

He was the son of an engineer and a housewife from Skógarströnd (today Dalabyggð municipality ). He served on all ships and aircraft of the Icelandic Coast Guard, from 1956 to 1963 as a mate and from 1964 to 1990 as a captain. Helgi Hallvarðsson was often at vorderster front, as the exclusive economic zone (also known under the name of 200-mile) at 12, 50 and 200 nautical miles has been extended .

He has written articles for the newspapers Morgunblaðið and Sjómannablaðið Víking.

In 1976 Helgi Hallvarðsson was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Falcons for his participation in the Cod Wars .
