Noah Smith

Noah Smith (born August 21, 1800 in Wakefield , Massachusetts , † 1868 ) was an American lawyer and politician who was Secretary of State of Maine from 1858 to 1860 .

Life

Noah Smith was born to Noah Smith and Mary Sweetser.

In 1830, Smith and his family moved to Calais , Maine. He was involved in politics and became a member of the Whig Party in the Maine House of Representatives . He became its speaker in 1854. He was Secretary of State of Maine from 1858 to 1860.

When Hannibal Hamlin , a friend of Smith's, was elected Vice President of the United States , Smith succeeded him and became Secretary of the United States Senate.

Smith married Hannah Draper Wheaton (1800–1849). He had seven children with her.

Noah Smith died in 1868. His grave is in Calais Cemetery, Calais.
