John E. Bunker

John Edward Bunker (born April 24, 1866 in Trenton , Maine , † August 16, 1918 in Bangor , Maine) was an American lawyer and politician who was Secretary of State of Maine from 1915 to 1916 .

Life

John Bunker was born in Trenton, Hancock County . He attended the East Maine Conference Seminary at Bucksport and the Coburn Classical Institute at Waterville . He then studied law with Wiswell, König, and Peters in Ellsworth and from 1890 at Boston University . For some time he was the chief librarian of the law school library there .

In October 1892 he was admitted to the bar. He then practiced in his own legal practice in Bar Harbor . For nine years he was Chairman of the Board of Selectman of Bar Harbor and for several years the Clerk of Courts of Hancook County. Originally a member of the Republican Party , he later joined the Democratic Party and was Secretary of State of Maine from 1915 to 1916 . In 1916 he was a Democratic candidate for the United States House of Representatives , but was defeated by Republican incumbent John A. Peters .

When the United States went to war with Germany , Governor Carl E. Milliken made him executive secretary of the Maine Public Safety Committee and later chairman of the Utilities Commission . He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and was Grand Master of the Grand Lodge (IOOF) of Maine .

John E. Bunker was married to Carolyn McNair Dodge Bunker (1872-1911). The couple had a daughter. He died on August 16, 1918 in the Eastern Maine General Hospital in Bangor. His grave is in Ledgelawn Cemetery in Bar Harbor.
