Bucksport was one of the six municipalities whose Grant by the King Wilhelm and Maria II.an awarded David Marsh and 350 other citizens of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The land allocation was upheld by the Massachusetts court in 1764.

Initially, the area was named Township No. 1 East of Penobscot River, Livermore Survey (T1 EPR LS) , or Township No. 1 West of Union River . The other five townships were Plantation No. 2 Orland , Plantation No. 3 Penobscot (Castine) , Plantation No. 4 Sedgwick , Plantation No. 5 Blue Hill and Plantation No. 6 surry .

Colonel Jonathan Buck reached the place in August 1762 along with James and William Duncan, Richard Emerson and William Chamberlain and began the settlement. The settlement was burned down by the British in 1779. As a town, the area was first named Buckstown in 1792 after Jonathan Buck, one of the first settlers. The name was changed to Bucksport in 1817. The town's first post office was established in 1799 and the Gazette of Maine, one of the early newspapers, was published in Buckstown in 1804. The Penobscot Bank was founded in 1804 and existed for six years.

The Eastern Maine Railway reached Bucksport in 1883, initially as the Bucksport and Bangor Railroad . It was taken over by the Maine Central Railroad . Passenger traffic was discontinued in 1937, since then only goods traffic has taken place on the route.
