Parnaos Chikviladze

Parnaos Lukitsch Tschikwiladze (born April 14, 1941 in Chabinaani , Kakheti , Georgian SSR , † June 14, 1966 in Moscow ) was a Soviet judoka who competed in the heavyweight division in the 1960s. He won an Olympic bronze medal and a European title.

The 1.84 m tall athlete from Burewestnik Tiflis won the silver medal in the heavyweight division behind Herbert Niemann from the GDR at the 1964 European Championships . The Soviet team won the team competition ahead of the Dutch. This year judo was part of the Olympic program for the first time at the Olympic Games in Tokyo . In the Olympic competitions , 15 participants from 13 countries competed in the heavyweight division. Tschikwiladze won his two preliminary rounds, but then lost in the semifinals to the Canadian Douglas Rogers and received the bronze medal.

In 1965, Chikwiladze lost again in the heavyweight final of the European Amateur Championships against Herbert Niemann. In the final of the open championships, he met the West German Günter Monczyk on the same day and won his only individual title. In 1966 he lost the European heavyweight championship final against Willem Ruska from the Netherlands .

Just a month after the 1966 European Championships, Parnaos Chikviladze died in a traffic accident.
