from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Siegfried Herbert "Jimmy" Niemann (born December 12, 1935 in Bernburg (Saale) ; † February 19, 1991 in Berlin ) was a German judoka in the 1960s, who in 1961 became the first GDR Judoka to win a European championship. Herbert Niemann, called by everyone just “Jimmy”, was European champion four times and in 1964 was the first East German Olympic starter in the all-German judo Olympic team.

Sports career

Growing up in Drosa near Köthen (Anhalt) , Herbert Niemann initially completed an apprenticeship as a wheelwright in his home town after completing his schooling .

The sports enthusiast Herbert Niemann got to know judo in 1954 while serving in the barracked people's police . Due to his obvious talent for this sport, which was not very popular at the time, he was spotted for the ZSK Vorwärts Strausberg in 1956 and taken over to the training center in Strausberg . After acquiring basic techniques and a solid basic training in judo, he came under the wing of the then ZSK head trainer Willi Lorbeer and was able to achieve national successes in judo very quickly thanks to his athletic advantages and sporting ambition. 1961 succeeded in the category “1. Dan ”in Milan the first European title for the German Judo Association of the GDR. By the end of his active career in 1966, three more titles followed at European championships. The greatest success of coach Hubert Sturm's protégé was winning the title at the European Championships in his own country in 1964 in the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle in Berlin . At the same point he was able to achieve third place in the team competition with the selection of the GDR . Above all, his brilliant fighting style as a left-wing fighter with special techniques such as Hiza-Guruma or his legendary Uchi-Mata received international attention .

Herbert Niemann had a friendly relationship with Anton Geesink , to whom he was narrowly defeated in the 1961 heavyweight final at the European Championships in Milan. Niemann was the only European who could bring Geesink down within a fight at the time. At the national level, Karl Nitz from SC Dynamo Berlin was his biggest competitor.

As a member of the all-German Olympic team , Herbert Niemann took part in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo . At these games, judo was in the program for the first time and Niemann was considered one of the most promising medal candidates in the heavyweight division. Because of a rib injury sustained during the preparations for the Olympic competition on site in Tokyo, he could not call up his range of services and retired early after the preliminary fights. At the fourth Judo World Championships in Rio de Janeiro in 1965 , despite his role as the reigning European champion, he was unsuccessful in medals.

In 1966 Herbert Niemann was able to win the Adria Cup in Split, which was only held in the heavyweight division, for the third time in a row after 1964 and 1965 and underlined his combative consistency. Herbert Niemann was the owner of the 4th Dan (Yondan).

After finishing his active career, Herbert Niemann was a junior coach from 1966 to 1972 and from 1969 to 1990 assistant coach at ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt .

February 19, 1991 Herbert Niemann committed suicide .

The training facility of the PSV-05 judoka from Köthen (Anhalt) is now reminiscent of the world-class athlete Herbert Niemann from Drosa. Old memories come to life: PSV 05 Köthen received a surprising visit to its training hall. In his father's home country, Ralf Grossmann went back to the mat.
