Karl Nitz

Karl Nitz (born October 16, 1932 in Schlochau , Pomerania) is a former judoka from the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

Karl Nitz began in the TSG Rodewisch with the judo and scored as a teenager in judo tournaments at district and DDR-level first successes. After being delegated to SC Dynamo Berlin , he won the GDR heavyweight championship title in 1957, 1959, 1961 and 1964. In 1963 he was the first dynamo judoka to win the European championship against the Italian Nicola Tempesta . He also received bronze medals at the European Judo Championships in 1962 and 1965. His greatest competitor at national level was Herbert Niemann , who also won the GDR championship title four times. After his active career, Nitz worked under club trainer Gert Schneider in the coaching staff of SC Dynamo Hoppegarten .
