Wernyhora ( Ukrainian Вернигора , roughly "man who overturned mountains"; died 1769 ) was a legendary wandering Ukrainian folk singer and prophet who allegedly lived in the 18th century. He is often depicted with a hurdy-gurdy .

It is believed that he came from the Cossacks . At a young age, Moses Vernyhora is said to have stayed in Zaporizhia and fought against the Muscovites , Turks and Tatars . He is said to have predicted the fall of the Kingdom of Poland at the end of the 18th century. The Russian authorities donated a prize for Wernyhora's head. Wernyhora supported the Confederation of Bar (1768–1772). According to legend, Vernyhora died around 1769 at the age of ninety-six in Parchomiwka ( Kiev Oblast ) and was buried in Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi .

The Polish historian Joachim Lelewel (1786–1861) wrote down Wernyhora's prophecies around 1830. Wernyhora has been depicted several times in Polish literature and painting.
