Korsun-Schewtschenkiwskyj ( Ukrainian Корсунь-Шевченківський - until 1944 Korsun ; Russian Корсунь-Шевченковский Korsun-Shevchenkovsky , Polish Korsuński , Polish Korsuń, is a city in the central Ukrainian Oblast of about 18,200 inhabitants (2017 with about 18,200 inhabitants of the central Ukrainian Oblast and the center of the Cherkrain region of Raj and Center) .
Korsun is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine and is located on the Ros River about 70 km west of Cherkassy . Administratively, the two villages Harbusyn ( Гарбузин ) and Samoridnja ( Саморідня ) also belong to the municipality.
The name of the city goes back to the ancient Greek-Byzantine city of Chersonese ( Korsun in old Russian), located in the Crimea , from which the first inhabitants of the city came. In honor of the Ukrainian national poet Taras Shevchenko , the city was renamed Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi in 1944.
history
The Korsun fortress was founded in 1032 by the Kiev Grand Duke Yaroslav the Wise and served to protect Kiev from nomads from the southern steppes . In 1240 the city was destroyed by the Tatars under Batu Khan . The city was rebuilt under the rule of Poland-Lithuania in 1585 and received Magdeburg city rights . Since 1793 Korsun belonged to the Russian Empire .
Korsun was the scene of military conflicts several times. In 1648, for example, there was a battle of the Cossack uprising under Bohdan Khmelnyzkyj and, during World War II, a large encircling operation of the Red Army took place near Korsun. The Museum of the Korsun Cauldron in the Poniatowski Palace is dedicated to the latter operation .
On February 14, 1944, Korsun was liberated from the occupation of the German Wehrmacht by Soviet troops .
