history

Montechiarugolo , Torelli Castle

The parts of the noble Poniatowski family that still exist today are descended from the Torelli family from Lombardy , whose progenitor Torello appears as a vassal of the archbishops of Ravenna in the first half of the 12th century . From 1406 they were Counts of Monte Chiarugulo (today Montechiarugolo , Province of Parma ), from 1428 Marchese . On March 11, 1569, they were granted the Polish indigenous status. On November 29, 1629, Giuseppe Salinguerra dei Torelli from the house of the Counts of Monte Chiarugulo accepted the name and coat of arms of the Polish Poniatowski on the occasion of his marriage to Sophia Poniatowska, daughter and heiress of Albert Poniatowski.

The most famous representative of this line was Stanislaus II August Poniatowski (1732–1798), last king of Poland since 1764 (reign 1764–1795). He raised his three brothers Kasimir, Crown Chamberlain, (* 1721; † 1780), Andreas and Michael to the Polish prince status in 1764, Andreas also became a Bohemian prince (dated Vienna 10 December 1765) and was dated the Bohemian incolat in the lordship Vienna December 29, 1765. With Kasimir's son Stanislaus III. (died February 12, 1833 in Florence) the legitimate descendants of the royal house have died out, but other branches are still in bloom.
