Prince Stanisław Poniatowski (born November 23, 1754 in Warsaw , † February 13, 1833 in Florence ) was a Polish lieutenant general and great chamberlain of Lithuania .

Life

origin

Stanislaw was a prince from the Polish dynasty Poniatowski . His parents were the Polish general of the Crown Army , Prince Kazimierz Poniatowski (1721-1800) and Apolonia Ustrzycka (1736-1814). He was the nephew of the last Polish king, Stanislaus II August Poniatowski .

Career

Poniatowski was a Senator of the Sejm . He was naturally involved in the events of his time due to his proximity to the royal family . He was a member of the Targowica Confederation , Grand Chamberlain of Lithuania from 1784 and critic of the Constitution of May 3, 1791 . Poniatowski was Starost in Podlachia , was also an officer in the Polish Crown Army, where he advanced on foot to the rank of Lieutenant General in the Guard Regiment.

In 1773 he received the Order of the White Eagle , was also the bearer of the Order of St. Andrew the First Appointed and in 1797 also joined the Russian Grand Priory of the Sovereign Order of Malta .

Poniatowski owned a palace in Warsaw on Frascati Street, from where he acted as a patron of the arts , a patron of paintings, and a collector of objets d'art and precious stones. His friend, the Polish general and envoy Carl Friedrich Ernst von Cocceji, also lived there . Another family seat had been in Korsuń since 1789 , where the family owned extensive estates.

After the partitions of Poland , Poniatowski emigrated to Rome and then in 1820 to Florence. In 1830 he published a catalog with a summary of his precious stones . After his death, the Christie's collection was sold in 1839 and thus scattered.

With Kassandra Luci di Tivoli (1785–1863), Poniatowski had five natural children, from whom the sons were legitimized and in 1847 and 1850, respectively, were raised to the rank of count or prince.
