Watutine ( Ukrainian Ватутіне ; Russian Ватутино Watutino ) is a city in Cherkassy Oblast in Ukraine with about 18,000 inhabitants. In addition to the city, the municipality also includes the village of Skalywatka ( Скаливатка ).

history

The city, designed on the drawing board, was founded in 1947 and named after the Soviet Army General Nikolai Fyodorowitsch Watutin , who was seriously wounded by Ukrainian nationalists during the war and died as a result. The first buildings in the city were built by German prisoners of war, among others. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the city has been part of the independent Ukraine, and in 1992 it was placed under oblast administration.

Watutine is on the Uman - Cherkassy railway line . Although the train station is near the city center, the station is called "Bagacheve". This is also where the bus station is located, from which buses run several times a day to all the surrounding cities in a medium distance such as Kiev , Uman and Cherkassy. Until the 1990s, coal was extracted in Watutine in an open-cast mine , some of which was further processed in a briquette factory on site. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, coal production was stopped and all related operations were shut down.

Infrastructure

The city center is crossed by Watutin Prospect, the main street on which the Palace of Culture is located. There is a year-round program of events there. The city has several schools and kindergartens. For some years now, the administration has been trying to expand and relocate industrial, service and commercial operations. There is a bread factory, a meat combine, a fireclay factory operated with French participation and several medium-sized companies. The area around Watutine is dominated by agriculture . There are also extensive managed forests that have a high recreational and recreational value.

Watutine is located on the Shpolka River (Ukrainian Шполка ), which is dammed into a lake there. Watutine is surrounded by the Zvenyhorodka district . Watutine is about 200 km south of the state capital Kiev and can be reached by road and rail links.
