The Raion Cherkasy (Ukrainian Черкаський район / Tscherkaskyj rayon , Russian Черкасский район / Cherkassky rayon ) is a 1923 founded administrative unit within the Cherkasy Oblast in the heart of Ukraine .
The Rajon has an area of 1617 km² and a population of about 75,000 inhabitants, the administrative seat is in the city of Cherkassy , which, however, is not part of the Rajon area in its function as the Oblast capital.
history
The Rajon was founded in 1923 and existed until 1930 when it was dissolved and added to the Okrug Shevchenko / Cherkassy. In 1932 it was recreated and subordinated to Kiev Oblast . In 1954 the Rajon became part of the newly created Cherkassy Oblast, since 1965 it has existed within its current borders, since 1991 it has belonged to today's Ukraine.
geography
The Rajon is located in the east of Cherkassy Oblast. It is bordered to the north by Rajon Zolotonosha , in the northeast on the Rajon Chornobai , in the southeast on the Rajon Chihirin , in the south for a short distance to the Rajon Kamianka and Rajon Smila , on the southwest by the Rajon Horodyshche , on the west by Rajon Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi and in the northwest to the Kaniw Raion .
The Rajon is located in the Dnieper highlands and is bounded in the northeast by the Dnepr , which is dammed up here to form the Kremenchuk reservoir , other rivers are the Tjasmyn and the Wilschanka (Вільшанка), with altitudes between 90 and 200 meters, parts of the area are forested.

At the municipal level, the Rajon is divided into a settlement council and 22 district councils, each of which is subordinate to individual localities.
