Edmund Robert Otto von Mach (born August 1, 1870 in Gaffert , Pomerania ; † July 15, 1927 in Bangor , Maine ) was a German-American art historian , university professor and author.

Life

Edmund von Mach, son of Edmund von Mach and his wife Melaine von Otto, attended school in Halle , Stolp and Schulpforta . He did his military service in the German army from 1889 to 1891 , emigrated to the United States in 1891 and graduated from Harvard University with a degree in art history . He was there in 1895 Bachelor of Arts (artium baccalaureus, AB), 1896 Master of Arts (Artium Magister, AM) and received his doctorate in 1900 for Ph.D. (Dr. phil.). He taught art history from 1899 to 1903 at Harvard University, from 1899 to 1902 at Wellesley College and from 1902 to 1915 at Bradford Academy in Haverhill, Massachusetts . Edmund von Mach wrote numerous entries on American artists for volume 1 (1907) to 12 (1916) of the Thieme-Becker artist lexicon .

Before the United States entered the war in World War I , he published several times in support of the German point of view and translated Paul Rohrbach's work on German cultural imperialism.

On June 23, 1903, he married Mary Ware Peirce.

Edmund von Mach died in the Eastern Maine General Hospital in Bangor after an appendix operation .

From Mach Site

The archaeologist Warren K. Moorehead (1866–1933) dug between 1910 and 1929 on Edmund von Mach's Little Gaffert estate, named after his hometown in Pomerania, in Brooksville (Maine), on an area of ​​around 100 by 40 meters, a shell pile site indigenous first settlers in that area ("Von Mach Site"). The Mach property owner had given permission to dig. Blackened ceramics, tools ( awls , fishing hooks) and utensils for making tools were found under layers of ash .
