history

Frankfort was organized as a town on June 25, 1789. At the time, the Frankfort area included the area from the west bank of the Penobscot River to the Soadabscook Stream. From this area the Towns Prospect, Winterport and Hampden, as well as parts of Belfast, Searsport and Stockton emerged.

The towns of Hampden and Prospect were split off in 1794 and became independent, the Town of Winterport in 1860. Additional land was given to Hampden in 1816, Swanville in 1832, Monroe in 1863 and Winterport in 1867.

The first settlers settled in the area in 1770. In 1773 fourteen families lived in the area. The first settlers made their living from hunting elk, beavers and muskrats, as well as fishing in the Penobscot River. The area belonged to the Waldo patent . Several owners made claims to the land. Eventually Thorndike & Company was found to be the owner and they sold the land to the settlers for $ 2 an acre.

Later shipbuilding, timber industry, agriculture and the mining of granite were the livelihoods of the settlers. The first sawmill was built by Jushua Treat in 1774 on the Marsh Stream. A dam for water regulation was built in 1904, the last mill closed in the 1940s. Frankfort was known for the gray-white granite that had been quarried from Mosquito Mountain since 1836. In 1846, mining was moved to Waldo Mountain. The granite was transported to the Penobscot River in ox wagons and shipped there. The amount of granite mined in 1850 was 20,000 tons per year. Granite mining stopped in 1914. The quarry was operated again from 1931 to 1965.

The granite was used in house building on site, but also in other regions of the United States. The granite became the Washington Monument , the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier , the Senate office building in Washington DC , the pillars of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York , the buildings of Fort Knox, which were built at the end of the 19th century, the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, the old post office building in Bangor and others.
