Thorndike, a Boston citizen with a penchant for agriculture, set up a farm with horses, cows, sheep, and poultry, and an orchard with 500 apple trees. This farm has long been known as the "Great Farm". As Jackson Plantation, the area was organized in 1812, the organization as a town took place on June 12, 1818, probably named after General Henry Jackson.
