The Montville area was part of the "Twenty Associates' Proprietary" grant from Joseph Pierce of Boston . Pierce sold the land rights to the settlers in the area. The first settler, named Stannard, settled in 1778, but left the area a few years later. Thus James Davis, a priest of the Presbyterian Church , became the first settler to settle permanently. His sons William and Joshua followed, as did other more distant relatives. Some settled in the area that is now part of neighboring Liberty. These families grew so much that the area was named "Davistown Plantation" after them. It kept the name until February 18, 1807, when it was organized as Town Montville.
Land was given to Knox in 1833 and to Liberty in 1876.
