history

Orland was one of six parishes whose grant was given by Kings William and Mary II to David Marsh and 350 other citizens of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The land allocation was upheld by the Massachusetts court in 1764.

Initially, the area was named Township No. 2 Orland East of Penobscot River, Livermore Survey (T2 EPR LS); Township No. 2 West of Union River, or as Eastern River Township No. 2 designated. The other five townships were Township No. 1 West of Union River , Plantation No. 3 Penobscot (Castine) , Plantation No. 4 Sedgwick , Plantation No. 5 Blue Hill and Plantation No. 6 surry . Another early name of the township was Alamasook .

There are official reports that the grant for Orland went to W. Dall, Nathaniel Snellings, Robert Treat, and other Boston owners, but this was believed to be a later grant for an additional area.

The Town of Orland was organized on February 21, 1800. The name comes from the English "Oar" (oar). An oar was found on the bank by Joseph Gross, an early settler in 1764. The town's assemblies were held in a residential building until 1804, then in the newly constructed school building.
