history

Settlement began in Mariaville in 1802. The first settlers were Fabrick, Seth Alcott, B. and D. Eppes, James Hapworth and Elisha Goodwin. In 1823 the area was organized as the Mariaville Plantation. On February 29, 1836, Mariaville was organized as a town. The name Mariaville came from the daughter of one of the larger landowners, William Bingham . The area was also named Bingham after him . Originally referred to as Parts of Township No. 14 and No. 20 Middle Division or Bingham's Penobscot Purchase . In 1829, the area that now includes Waltham Town was separated from Mariaville. In 1850 land was separated for the town of Tilden, which went back to Mariaville in 1852.
