Clifton is a town in Penobscot County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 921 inhabitants in 468 households on an area of 92.98 km².

Geographical location
Clifton is the southeasternmost town in Penobscot County and borders on Hancock County . It is bordered by Chemo Pond to the northwest, Hopkins Pond to the east, Lower Springy Pond and Burnt Pond to the south, and Fitts Pond to the west . The Clifton area also includes Parks Pond , Upper Springy Pond and Middle Springy Pond . The surface is flat, without any significant elevations.

Settlement in the Clifton area began around 1815. As a town, Clifton was organized on August 8, 1848, initially under the name Maine . The name was changed to Clifton a short time later. Previously the area was known as Jarvis Gore .
