history

The first settlers in Levant were William and George Tebbets and Messrs Boobar and Knowland, who settled the area before 1800. When Major Moses Hodsdon settled in the Kenduskeag Village area in 1801, this area was still part of the Levant area. The sawmills and gristmills he built, as well as three apartment buildings, a shop and a forge, were among the first buildings in the area. His brothers followed him into the area and they too set up other businesses. The settlers were able to acquire the land rights from William Wetmore, who had acquired them from the Commonwealth in 1792. The name of the plantation was Kenduskeag, which kept the name until it was organized as a town on June 14, 1813. The town was named Levant. The north-eastern part of the town was split off in 1852 and organized as Kenduskeag as an independent town.

Initially, the area was named Township No. 2, Third Range North of Waldo Patent (T2 R3 NWP) .

The now disused Bangor (Maine) tram opened up the area from 1889 to 1945.
