Mattawamkeag Town was organized on February 14, 1860. Previously, the area was organized as Mattawamkeag Plantation in 1854. This was located in the area of ​​a former Indian settlement of the eastern Abenaki . Due to its location on two large rivers, the area was explored by European immigrants as early as 1624. A first settler settled in 1829. That year the Houlton Military Road also reached Mattawamkeag.
