Geographical location
Mattawamkeag is in the east of Penobscot County, in the north borders with Aroostook County . The western boundary of the area is the Penobscot River . The Mattawamkeag River , which flows into the Penobscot River, flows west through the southern part . Several small rivers flow in a southerly direction through the area of the town and flow into the Mattawamkeag River or the Penobscot River. In the center is the only lake in the area, the Back Settlement Pond . The surface is flat, without any significant elevations.

history
Mattawamkeag Town was organized on February 14, 1860. Previously, the area was organized as Mattawamkeag Plantation in 1854. This was located in the area of a former Indian settlement of the eastern Abenaki . Due to its location on two large rivers, the area was explored by European immigrants as early as 1624. A first settler settled in 1829. That year the Houlton Military Road also reached Mattawamkeag.

Centrally through the Mattawamkeag area, US Highway 2 runs north-south and parallel to the Penobscot River, in the western part of the town, Maine State Route 157 .
