history

The area that is now the Town of Exeter was granted in 1793 as a grant to the Marbleheal Academy and surveyed that same year by Ephraiin Ballard and Samuel Weston. It was divided into individual plots by Moses Hodsdon in 1800. In 1801 Lemuel Tozier was the first settler in Exeter. As a plantation, the area was organized under the name Blaisdelltown and organized on February 16, 1811 under the name Exeter as a town. The original name after the survey was Township No. 3, Fourth Range North of Waldo Patent (T3 R4 NWP) or Marblehead Academy Grant .
