Lincoln is a town in Penobscot County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 5085 inhabitants in 2866 households on an area of ​​193.34 km².

Geographical location

Lincoln is centrally located in Penobscot County. The northwestern border of the area is the Penobscot River . Several small rivers flow north through the town's area and flow into the Penobscot River. There are several lakes in the town area. The larger ones include the Long Pond and Caribou Pond in the north and the Upper Cold Stream Ponds in the south. The central lakes Mattanawcook Pond , Croocked Pond and Folsom Pond form a chain of lakes with which the Upper Long Pond is also connected. history

Settlement began in 1822. A larger group arrived in the area in 1825, and those early settlers included Israel Heald, John Carpenter, Alfred Gates, Benjamin Hammond, Stephen Chase, Humphrey Merrill, and Ira Fisk. All areas that were not sold to other settlers, bought at the time the Governor of Maine Enoch Lincoln , after whom the town was named. The construction of the Houlton Military Road, which ran through Lincoln, gave the settlements a boost. Since Lincoln was central to the loggers, it became a meeting place for them.

Lincoln is made up of the former River Townships No. 2 and No. 3, which belonged to the second and third range and a half township, which went as a grant to JE Foxcroft from Mattanawcook.
