Settlement of the area began in 1827. On January 31, 1835, Edinburgh was organized as an independent town. Previously, the Township No. 1 Old Indian Purchase, West of Penobscot River (T1 OIP WPR) . Further designations were in a drawing: Township No. 1, First Range (Township No. 1, Second Range, being now part of Lagrange ).
