The original name for the area was: Township No. 7, Fourth Range North of Bingham's Penobscot Purchase (T7 R4 NBPP) . On September 8, 1856, Drew was organized as a plantation. This organization was confirmed on January 25, 1868. It was organized as a town on April 5, 1921, but Drew was reorganized as a plantation in 1937 after the difficulties of the Great Depression .

Settlement began on the Drew area in 1825.
