Settlement of the area started around 1800. Hudson was first organized in 1824 as Jackson Plantation. On February 25, 1825, the organization as Town followed, initially under the name Kirkland. The name was changed to Hudson in 1855. The original name for the area was Township No. 1, Fourth Range North of Waldo Patent (T1 R4 NWP) .
