Milford is a town in Penobscot County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 3070 inhabitants in 1385 households on an area of 118.62 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Milford has a total area of 118.62 km², of which 118.18 km² is land and 0.44 km² is made up of water .
Geographical location
Milford is in the south of Penobscot County. The western border of the area of the town forms the Penobscot River . Several smaller rivers flow through and flow into the Milford area, the largest being the Sunkhaze Stream , which flows centrally to the west . There are only smaller lakes in the area. The surface is flat, without any significant elevations. In the area of the town is the Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge .

history
Settlement in the area began in 1800. Milford was organized on February 28, 1833 as an independent town. Before that there was an organization called Sunkhaze Plantation . It was originally named Township No. 3 Old Indian Purchase, East of Penobscot River (T3 OIP EPR) .
The area was surveyed from 1801 on behalf of Massachusetts. One of the surveyors, Joseph Butterfield, returned with his family in 1802 and settled here. The first sawmill was built in 1826. Others followed.
The Bodwell Water Power Company Plant is a historic building and landmark on the banks of the Penobscot River.

Parks
The Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is centrally located in the Milford area. It consists of moors, swamps and alluvial forests and is the second largest area of moorland in the state of Maine. With eleven different ecosystems, it is frequented by more than 140 species of birds and managed by the US Fish & Wildlife Service.
