history

Settlement of the Hampden area began around 1767 and the first settler in the area was Benjamin Wheeler. More settlers arrived shortly after him and Wheeler, a carpenter, built several mills. The settlement became known as Wheelersborough. After several raids by British troops, the settlers fled in 1779 through the woods to Kennebec and from there to Woolwich and Portland. They returned in 1783. The area was measured and divided in 1796 by Ephraim Ballard. 100 acres of land were allocated to each household if the household settled in the area prior to 1784. These settlers had to pay a fee of $ 6. If they settled after 1784 but before 1794, a fee of $ 50 was due. As a town, Hampden was organized on February 24, 1794 and named after John Hampden.

The Edythe Dyer Community Library is located in Hampden . It was founded in 1971 and was initially based at the Hampden Academy. She got her own building in 1983 when Edythe Dyer, who moved to Mount Desert Island, donated her house in Hampden as a building for a community library.
